DURHAM – An early-morning fire destroyed a barn on Royalsborough Road in Durham on Sept. 3.

According to the Durham Fire Department, the fire started in a barn behind a home on 1862 Royalsborough Road. Fire engines raced to the scene at about 2:30 a.m. to battle the blaze.

The fire, which destroyed the barn, extended into the house, firefighters said. The house sustained mainly smoke damage in the blaze, though there was some fire damage on the back side. According to the fire department, the two people living in the home escaped without any injuries.

The state Fire Marshall’s office will be investigating the fire, but firefighters said the cause of the fire did not appear to be suspicious, adding it appeared to be an accidental ignition in the barn.

Crews from Freeport, Pownal, Brunswick, Lisbon and New Gloucester assisted at the scene and Auburn provided station coverage for Durham during the incident.
