GORHAM (AP) — The University of Southern Maine says a fire at a residence hall on the Gorham campus was intentionally set.

The fire was reported early Monday morning in a recycling closet in Upton-Hastings Hall. It forced the temporary evacuation of about 200 newly arrived students. No injuries were reported.

Officials say a sprinkler system in the closet extinguished the fire. There was no fire or smoke damage outside of the closet.

The Portland Press Herald reports the State Fire Marshal’s office and USM police are investigating.

Classes begin today.
