Junior Zach Danssaert had two goals and an assist and senior Eddie Jones tallied a goal and two assists to move the Polar Bears to 1-1. The Huskies dropped their second straight match to fall to 1-4.
The Polar Bears built a 2-0 lead in the opening half on goals from junior Ben Brewster and Danssaert. Jones assisted on both goals. Brewster picked up his goal in the sixth minute of play, flicking in a header of a Jones throwin. Danssaert doubled the advantage in the 29th minute, redirecting a Jones cross from the left wing.
Bowdoin poured it on in the final 25 minutes, scoring six times. Senior Michael Gale, sophomore Daniel Melong, Jones, sophomore Eric Goitia, Danssaert and sophomore Sam White scored as the Polar Bears blew the match open.
Junior Will Wise and sophomore Ian McNamara shared the shutout, with Wise making one save for Bowdoin. Chad O’Brien started for the Huskies and made five saves before giving way to Korey Mulherin with 18 minutes to play. Mulherin recorded three stops.
Bowdoin’s eight goals were the most by the team since scoring nine against the University of New England in 2006.
Bowdoin entertains the University of Maine Farmington on Saturday (noon).
Men’s tennis
Behind a stellar weekend from sophomore Kyle Wolstencroft, the Bowdoin College men’s tennis team enjoyed an excellent start to its fall tournament season at Stonybrook, N.Y.
In a field that featured several Division I programs, Wolstencroft won the B-flight singles crown with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Chris Sosensteel of Stevens. He also teamed with doubles partner Doug Caplan to cruise to the A-flight doubles title with an 8-3 win over a Stevens duo.
In another impressive performance, Bowdoin’s firstyear doubles combo of Charles Savage and Luke Trinika advanced to the finals of the B-flight bracket before falling.
Overall, Bowdoin players carded a 19-10 record in play this weekend.
The Polar Bears will return to the court on Sept. 28 at the ITA New England Regional hosted by Williams College.
Women’s rugby
Bowdoin rolled to a perfect 3-0 record to claim its division at the Beantown Preseason Tournament hosted by UMass-Amherst this weekend.
The Polar Bears were dominant in wins over Williams (59-3), Amherst (12-0) and Smith (15-0), racking up a cumulative score of 86-3 over the three matches.
The Polar Bears will begin their regular season slate in the inaugural New England Small College Rugby Conference campaign this upcoming Saturday at home against Williams at 11 a.m.
On Saturday, Bowdoin cruised to a 38-0 halftime lead en route to a dominant win over Williams. Bowdoin took possession early and rarely relinquished the ball in the first half.
Bowdoin’s forwards and backs worked well together in the open field. Former Mt. Ararat High School studentathlete Randi London scored twice and converted seven kicks through the uprights for a total of 24 points. Helen White, benefiting from assists from Maura Allen, added two tries, while Laurel Mast, Charlotte Kleiman and Dani McAvoy added a try apiece.
In a more challenging match in the afternoon, the Polar Bears dodged tornado warnings, torrential rain and a much-improved Amherst squad to take a shutout win.
Bowdoin led 7-0 at intermission thanks to a first-half try by Kerry Townsend and converted by London.
Amanda Montenegro made a nice run for a second-half try, and the Polar Bear defense held from there, locking down the Amherst attack and getting a highlight-reel tackle by freshman Anna Piotti to preserve the shutout.
On Sunday, Bowdoin clinched the perfect weekend with another shutout against Smith.
Piotti finished a nice series of passes with a nifty run to give the Polar Bears an early 5-0 lead, and with a London conversion led 7-0 at the break. A hard-fought second half resulted in Bowdoin’s next score coming via penalty try. Anna Tankersley finished off the scoring for the Polar Bears in the win.
The Polar Bears have won six straight matches at the Beantown Tournament overall, dating back to 2010.
Women’s tennis
The Polar Bears opened their fall tournament slate with a strong showing at the Linda Morehouse Invitational at Williams College last weekend.
Against a field that included players from Vassar, Middlebury, Skidmore and Williams, the Polar Bears played a round-robin divided into flights.
First-year Courtney Gallagher led the way for Bowdoin in singles action, posting three wins in four matches in the B-flight competition. Rookie Tiffany Cheng also picked up a pair of B-flight singles wins, while Kellen Alberstone won two matches in the A-flight.
In doubles play, Bowdoin’s A-flight combos of Chantalle Lavertu/Emma Chow and Alberstone/Cheng each won two of their three matches.
