BRUNSWICK — Joan M. Coffin, RN, age 81 of Maple St., died Sunday, September 9th at Mid Coast Hospital. She was born in New York City, NY on July 15, 1931, the daughter of Russell and Loretta Loucks.

She was educated in the New York City schools and married Richard A. Coffin in February of 1950 at the age of 17 and they resided in Gurnet and raised a family. Joan worked for the Brunswick School Lunch Program at the Brunswick Junior High School.

Joan then became an EMT and decided to pursue a career in nursing at the age of 50. She graduated from the CMMC School of Nursing and worked as a charge nurse in the Emergency Room at CMMC for 16 years. Upon her retirement, she volunteered at the Mid Coast Hospital Emergency Room and gave compassionate care to her ex-husband, Richard.

Joan enjoyed line dancing and was a member of the Senior’s Have Talent Line Dancing group. She was a good friend to many and the best letter and card writer ever. Joan was independent and strong willed, loved life and her family and friends.

She is survived by her children Dr. Linda C. Coffin and her husband Dr. Paul Matthias of Seekonk, MA, Wayne Coffin and Allyson Ammons of Brunswick, grandson Zachary Coffin Matthias, daughter in law Susie Coffin, and many nieces and nephews.

Joan is predeceased by her son, Vaughn Coffin.

Memorial visiting hours will be held on Saturday, September 15th from 12 Noon to 2PM at Stetson’s Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick. Burial will be at a later date in New Meadows Cemetery, Brunswick.
