Topsham police, fire and rescue personnel were called to a multi-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon on Route 196 near the Interstate 295 off ramp that left one car involved on its roof.

Topsham Police Chief Christopher Lewis said Wednesday it appears the driver of the car that allegedly caused the crash was driving down the median strip, lost control, scraped along the side of a car and may have already started to lift when it hit a second car and became airborne. The car landed on its roof in oncoming traffic, which was able to stop before hitting it.

The driver of the car was transported to Parkview Adventist Medical Center in Brunswick for minor injuries and was charged for operating after suspension and driving to endanger. A female passenger in the overturned car did not require transport. No serious injuries resulted from the crash.

On Wednesday, Lewis said the crash remained under investigation and that police were looking at speed as a factor. In addition to the drivers of the vehicles involved, police have two witnesses to the crash, which was reported around 3 p.m.

Additional information about the crash was not available this morning.
