Join avid birder and Boothbay Region Land Trust volunteer Nancy Bither at Zak Preserve as she searches for birds of all types while focusing on sparrows. This is the time of year some sparrows leave Maine for tropical climates, some hunker down for the winter, and others arrive from Canada. Birders of all levels and abilities are welcome. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring a pair of binoculars. This event is free and open to everyone. Registration requested. Call 633-4818.

Joy of Birding

Naturalist, educator and registered Maine Guide Mike Shannon will illustrate ways that knowledge of basic bird behavior enhances our understanding of birds and aids us in identification. A former director of the Audubon Ecology Camp on Hog Island, Shannon has also served as master naturalist for the Massachusetts Audubon Society. Join Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust on a hike of Verona Island’s small island. Meet at the state rest area on Route 1 on Verona Island, just before the big bridge. Waterbird Walk

7-11 a.m. in Sanford

York County Audubon is leading a birding walk around the Sanford Sewage Plant, a site that promises views of duck, waterbirds, sparrows and warblers. The field trip is free but participants must sign in at the front office. To get to the sewage plant, take Gavel Road east of Route. 4 in Sanford. For more information, call 415-0667.
