BRUNSWICK

Mid Coast Hospital needs purple baby caps, and is asking local knitters and crocheters to make them.

In association with Midcoast Maine Community Action, the hospital will distribute the caps throughout November and December to parents of newborns in the hospital’s maternity ward as part of their “Period of Purple Crying” campaign.

The program is part of a national initiative to remind new moms and dads that a baby’s crying is normal, and that they must keep their cool even while Junior is losing his, or hers.

It “strives to inform and remind parents of the dangers of reacting in frustration by shaking or abusing an infant,” according to a statement released this week by Mid Coast Hospital.

Caps can be made of any pattern and in any shade of soft, baby-friendly purple yarn. Knitters should include their name and address when they donate caps they have made. While the knitter’s name will be included on a tag inside the cap, the address will be used only by the hospital to thank the caps’ creators.
