TOPSHAM — The first time around, the Mt. Ararat High School boys soccer team was outplayed by Lewiston in a 3-0 loss.
The second time, the Eagles showed how far they have come, putting together a solid 80-minute effort in a 2-1 Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference victory over the Blue Devils on Tuesday.
Both teams are now 8-1-1, with Mt. Ararat scheduled to host Oxford Hills on Friday.
“This is a huge win after not playing very well at Lewiston,” said Mt. Ararat coach Rick Renaud. “This game was more back-and-forth, but we controlled the first 25 minutes of the second half, and the defense of Dan Purinton, Dylan Michaud and Alex LaPierre played well.”
Thailand foreign exchange student Parit Chancherngpanich staked the Eagles to a 1-0 halftime lead, putting home a pass from Robbie Small with 4:56 left until halftime.
Mt. Ararat doubled its lead 12:09 into the second half when Jason Tome converted a throw-in from Eric Bowie.
Yusuf Yasa gave Lewiston a chance when he blasted a shot past Mt. Ararat goaltender Gabe Pelletier (three saves) with 16:38 left, but the Eagles held on the rest of the way.
Mt. Ararat finished with a 10-5 shots advantage, with Lewiston netminder Eric Soucy turning away seven shots.

Kyle Whitman finished off a flip-throw pass from Tyler Bard with three minutes left in the second overtime as Lisbon picked up a Mountain Valley Conference win over the 2-9-1 Raiders at Lisbon Falls.
“This team is getting comfortable with the way they play, and the defense is working hard to shut down opponents, with the hopes that we can get a goal or two,” said Lisbon coach Dan Sylvester, whose Greyhounds improved to 4-6-1 and visit Mt. Abram on Friday (3:30 p.m.).
Lisbon held an 8-7 shots advantage and 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Goaltender Nate Bergeron had seven saves for the shutout, while Oak Hill keeper Kyle Fields turned away five shots.
Playing well for the Greyhounds were defenders Brett Williams and Elliot Manocal.

Konnor Scarponi had three goals to lead the visiting Dragons to a KVAC victory over Oxford Hills at South Paris.
Ryan Black gave the 7-2-2 Dragons, who host rival Mt. Ararat this upcoming Tuesday, a 1-0 lead 12 minutes into the game. Blake Gordon picked up one of his two assists.
Scarponi scored the final three goals, with an assist each going to Black and Jesse Arford.
In goal, Greg Walton and Ryan Brescia combined for the shutout on four saves.
Oxford Hills (2-9) keeper Jake Beauchesne had seven stops.

The host Clippers (7-0-3) outshot Freeport 11-3, but the Falcons received 11 saves from goaltender Brendan Qualls in a Western Maine Conference deadlock at Yarmouth.
“We changed our shape and had everyone healthy for the first time,” said Freeport coach Joe Heathco. “They missed some opportunities, and Connor Dietrich had a breakaway for us to win it in the second overtime. We played together and trusted each other, playing as a group. Hopefully we can build on this.”
The Falcons are 2-6-2 and visit Cape Elizabeth Friday night at 7 p.m.
Playing well for Freeport were Landon Easler and Ryder Bennell.
Yarmouth keeper Andrew Fochler had one stop.

Kyle Fletcher scored three goals as Monmouth Academy ran away with a 3-0 MVC victory over Wiscasset on Tuesday.
Joe Menice, Casey Clement and Russell Neal also chipped in with assists for the 3-5-3 Mustangs.
Kasey Smith made 12 saves for Monmouth, while Nate Mills stopped 14 shots for the Wolverines, now 6-5-1 and scheduled to host Oak Hill on Oct. 9.

Randy Moody tallied three goals and three assists to lead Richmond past Rangeley in an East-West Conference tilt on Tuesday.
The host Bobcats improved to 11-0 and are scheduled to entertain Greater Portland Christian in Friday.
Eddie Stewart chipped in with two goals and a like number of assists, while Curtis Anderson had two goals, Nate Tribbett a goal and assist, Mike Stewart a goal, and Colin Acord, Marcus Blake and Cameron Emmons an assist each.
Richmond led in shots 22-3 and corner kicks 6-2, with goaltender Dustin Sullivan making three saves.
Gunner Johnson had 12 stops for Rangeley.

The host Shipbuilders rallied from a halftime deficit for their fourth consecutive victory in KVAC Class B action at Bath.
Trailing 2-1, Paul Whalen headed in a goal off a corner kick from Nick Theriault with 21:26 remaining to tie the contest.
With 8:08 remaining, PC Ostergaard scored unassisted, and Morse (4-7 and scheduled to visit Medomak Valley on Friday) held on the rest of the way.
Theriault gave the Shipbuilders a 1-0 lead 6:14 into the contest, but Nokomis answered on goals from Josh Orcutt (assisted by Lucas Hayden) and Hayden for a 2-1 lead for the Warriors.
Duane Tardif turned aside three shots in the win, while Nokomis goaltender had eight stops.
