Fighting the invasives

Seventh grade students at Frank H. Harrison Middle School in Yarmouth expanded their knowledge of local invasive species by connecting with the Royal River Conservation Trust, specifically head steward Kyle Warren.

On Sept. 27, Warren and a fellow environmental educator were guest lecturers in all seventh grade science classes. Today, students will travel across town to the Spear Farm Estuary Preserve to get a firsthand look at the multiple invasive plant species there. The students will identify and remove some of these species while in the ?eld.

Cultural exchange turns 25

For the past 25 years, Falmouth Middle School students have been participating in a cultural exchange with students and teachers from the Rossett School in Harrogate, United Kingdom.

The exchange is about two weeks long. Rossett students visit in October and spend time at Falmouth Middle School. The also go site seeing, enjoy outdoor activities, and visit L.L. Bean and Boston.

Falmouth students go to England in April and see the Yorkshire Dales, medieval architecture, museums, and spend the last few days in London. They also participate in outdoor activities including rugby.

According to Megan Lovett, an art teacher from Falmouth, the defining experience is living with the families on the other side of the pond.

Falmouth Middle School has organized a potluck celebratory dinner, 6:30-8 p.m. Oct. 25, at Falmouth Elementary School, for all past participants and parents. The school is located at 58 Woodville Road. Everyone is encouraged to bring old photos and memorabilia from past trips.
