OLD ORCHARD BEACH — The Old Orchard Beach Seagulls used a balanced offense Saturday afternoon, trouncing Sacopee Valley 83-0.

Old Orchard Beach had a 14-0 lead 20 seconds into the game on mistakes by Sacopee Valley. Sacopee fumbled the opening kickoff handing the ball over to the Gulls offense. OOB punched it in on a 25-yard TD run from Joey Gildard. The ensuing drive from Sacopee Valley led to a fumble picked up by OOB and returned for a touchdown.

OOB scored in multiple ways, not just on offense and defense, but special teams, too. Bryan Roberts returned two punts for touchdowns, one of 42 yards and the other of 38.

“The punt team had some good blocks, Quincy Grace led the way with great blocks, and I broke a few tackles to score,” said Roberts.

Quarterback Matt Parks passed to Grace, who dragged four defenders into the end zone for a score. Reserve receiver Tyler Scott caught two passes for touchdowns from Bryan Roberts in the half.

OOB led 69-0 at the half with 49 yards of total offense on 12 plays. The defense held Sacopee Valley to negative seven yards in the half never, allowing it to cross its own 35 yard line.

Breakout players for the Gulls were: Gildard with 43-rushing yards and two TDs, Roberts with two punt return TDs and three passing TDs. A standout defensive player was Grace, with nine tackles for a loss.

The lopsided win also allowed OOB’s non-starters to play. Scott took advantage with three TDs and 68 yards receiving.

“It felt good. I’ve played a little bit of offense this year but I got a chance to play a lot today,” said Scott. “I got chances to catch some balls and score.”

After the half, OOB got a chance to use all 23 players available for the game and building experience in new positions. Sacopee Valley had two first downs in the second half but Old Orchard Beach’s backups still held them out of the end zone.

“(The experience) helps me prepare for bigger and better opponents we play later on in the year, and it gives me more confidence when I get the ball,” said Scott.

OOB (5-1) will have a tougher opponent as it plays Traip Academy (5-1) at home on Friday.

“We had a good mindset and good sportsmanship, none of us talked trash. We kept our mind focused and now we’re just looking forward to Traip next week.” said Roberts.
