To the Editor:
In the event of a tie vote in the U.S. Senate, the vice president casts the deciding vote. Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney’s choice for the vice presidential nomination, would certainly continue as the hyper-conservative his voting record shows him to be.
On many issues, this would be a disaster. For example, on women’s rights he has voted 59 times to narrow a woman’s right to choose. He has supported a bill that would permit hospitals to refuse to provide an abortion for a woman even if her life was at stake. And he has repeatedly voted to remove funding from Planned Parenthood which would leave millions of women without the many screening services, contraceptives and comprehensive health care.
His votes reach down into our private lives, and as vice president, he would have the power to impose more of his views on the women of Maine. We should not let this happen.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
