MAINE Department of Transportation has scheduled a public meeting on Thursday to collect input about the intersection of U.S. Route 1 North and Interstate 295 in Brunswick. MDOT plans to begin reworking the intersection next spring.
The intersection of U.S. Route 1 North and I- 295 is going to be reworked next spring, and a public hearing is scheduled for Thursday evening to let residents add their input.

The Maine Department of Transportation plans to remove the yield sign where Route 1 currently joins Pleasant Street, bend the road hard to the left, then replace it with a T-intersection and a stop sign.

“We’re actually going to be relocating a section of Route 1 and abandoning a section of the northbound yield lane,” said MDOT project manager Brian Keezer. “The intersection is going to come into Pleasant Street much closer to the southbound spur than it does now.”

After the change, drivers will have to come to a complete stop and make almost a 90- degree right turn to rejoin traffic flow on Pleasant Street.

Construction is proposed to begin May 1 and should take no more than two or three months to complete, Keezer said.

According to MDOT, traffic surveys indicate there won’t be congestion heavy enough to cause excessive backups at the new stop sign.

Contractors will build the new road first, open the new lane shift and then close off the existing yield lane. Then they’ll tear up the pavement, grade and reseed the area for grass.

The hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Brunswick Station, 16 Station Ave.
