“Godspell” was conceived and originally directed by John-Michael Tebelak, with music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, best known for “Pippin” and “Wicked.” It features many well-loved songs including “Day by Day,” “All for the Best,” “Turn Back, O Man” and “Beautiful City.”
Solo and group numbers spring from a series of parables based on the Gospel of Matthew, performed by an energetic, young ensemble of actors and singers.
Begun as a college project, the musical moved to an off- Broadway debut in 1970, and “Godspell” has since been a favorite in professional revivals, including 2011, in colleges, and in high schools.
