Army Reserve Pvt. Michael D. Sprague has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Sprague is the son of Patti and Arthur Conrad, Scarborough, and is a 2011 graduate of Scarborough High School.

Army National Guard Pfc. Robert G. Chauvette has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. He is the son of Joy Chauvette of Westbrook and graduated from Westbrook High School in 2008.

Navy Seaman Gregory W. Peck has completed Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is the son of Wendy Adams of Durham, N.H. and William Peck of Kennebunk.
Marine Corps Pfc. Kevin B. Thibault, son of Patricia and Philip Thibault of Cumberland, has graduated from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. Thibault is a 2011 graduate of Greely High School, Cumberland.

Free legal assistance to veterans applying for Veterans Administration disability benefits will be provided by volunteer attorneys and law students. The clinic takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 27 at Portland Public Library, 5 Monument Square, Portland. The Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project and the American Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division will help with applications and appeals claims. An appointment is not necessary but veterans may call Rob Liscord, AmeriCorps VISTA member, at 400-3232, if they wish to schedule a specific time for a meeting. 

The Midcoast Maine area Navy Birthday Ball, celebrating the Navy’s 237th birthday, will be held from 5 to 11 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Inn at Brunswick Station, 4 Noble St., Brunswick. Maj. Gen. (Ret.) John W. Libby is the keynote speaker and there will be dinner and dancing with Freeze Frame. The public is  invited to attend. The cost is $50 per person.
