BATH — Anne Elizabeth Johnson Brackett died in Bath, Maine on Monday, September 24, 2012, after a long illness. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Nathaniel P. Brackett. She also leaves their daughters: Deborah Carmel of Sandwich, MA, Elizabeth Brackett of Minneapolis, MN, Binney Brackett of Limerick, ME, Margaret Bailey of Waltham, MA, and Rebecca Brackett of Waldoboro, ME, and eight grandchildren.

Anne was born in 1923, the daughter of Frederick Plumley Johnson and Florence May Bishop Johnson. She was predeceased by her brother, Arthur Menzies Johnson. After graduating from high school in Waltham, Massachusetts, Anne attended Wellesley College. She made a two-hour trip on three different busses to get from Waltham to Wellesley daily. After her first year, she earned a scholarship that enabled her to stay on campus and pursue her study of fine art. During World War II, Anne served in the Navy as a code breaker in Washington, DC, rising to the rank of lieutenant.

After the war, the Bracketts raised their children in Waltham, MA. There Anne was active in the Waltham Community Foundation, the College Club and the First Parish Unitarian-Universalist Church. To further her life-long interest in the stock market, Anne founded an investment club with several other Waltham residents.

Anne was an artist in heart and soul. She created many beautiful paintings in watercolor and acrylic that serve as tangible tribute to her memory. She also excelled at business administration and managed her husband’s medical practice. Fortunately, the office was in their home, since she devoted much of her life to raising their five daughters.

Anne had a long connection to Maine, spending summers in Five Islands ever since she was a girl. She and Nat retired to Maine twelve years ago, living in Bath and attending the Unitarian-Universalist Church in Brunswick. A memorial service will be held mid-November in Bath, Maine.
