BRUNSWICK — Loring F. Nies, age 78 of Sparwell Lane died Tuesday, October 16th at Maine Medical Center in Portland. He was born on February 21 1934, the son of Loring Frederick and Margaret Catherine Holland Nies in Lynn, MA.

Larry graduated from Swampscott High School and Tufts University of College of Engineering. He received a Master’s Degree from Chrysler Institute of Engineering. In addition, he earned a Master’s Degree in Organizational Psychology from the University of Detroit.

On September 4, 1954, he married Ruth Davis in Swampscott, MA. He worked for Chrysler and General Motors for several years and his career took him around the world, where he resided in both Melbourne, Australia and Tokyo, Japan. While working for GM, Larry built a mid-engine Corvette, which debuted in the 1967 Paris Auto Show and was subsequently shown around the world.

He was a member of the Automotive Society for Mechanical Engineers and the Association of Automotive Engineers. Larry was also an environmentalist. He contributed to wild life conservancies and enjoyed bird watching.

He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them.

Besides his wife Ruth of Brunswick, Larry is survived by four children Loring Nies of Lafayette, Indiana, Donald Nies and his wife Teri or Orlando, Florida, Barbara Nies and her husband Jerald Singer of Fairfax, Virginia, and Elizabeth Nies of Brunswick, Maine, a sister Margaret Casey of New Hampshire and Florida, 7 grandchildren, and 2 greatgrandchildren. Private services will be held at a later date.
