PORTLAND — Several local Cheverus High School students were honored Sept. 23 during Undergraduate Awards Night.
One honoree, Zachary Walker-Elders, won three awards. The senior from Lisbon Falls was the top Cheverus student who took the American High School Math Exam and earned a bronze award in the PSAT/NMSQT Test for AP Environmental Science.
In addition, he received the Wheeling Jesuit University Award. The award is presented to a student based on academic performance, extracurricular involvement and commitment to serving the community. The book presented, “Tattoos on the Heart,” was written by a Jesuit priest who founded Homeboy Industries, the largest gang intervention program in the country. In addition to the book, Walker- Elders will receive a $1000 scholarship, renewable for four years.
In announcing the award, it was noted that “this year’s recipient has distinguished himself as a scholar, earning high honors and acceptance to the National Honor Society. He has been a member of the math team, the cross country team, the swimming and diving team, and the sailing team.”
