READFIELD — Maranacook jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead en route to a 4-1 Western Maine Class B high school boys soccer quarterfinal victory over 10th-seeded Freeport on Wednesday.
The 13-0-2 Black Bears outshot the Falcons (4-10-2) 18-6.
Maranacook, which hosts No. 3 Falmouth on Saturday, received a goal each from Kody Solmitz, Kent Mohlar, Zach Elwell and Alex Tooth, with Freeport’s Connor Dietrich answering in the second half.
“Maranacook is a physical, fast team that competes hard,” said Freeport coach Joe Heathco, who loses seniors Landon Easler, Cole Harrison, Parker Matheson, Gage Golding, Sam Farrar, Dietrich, Tucker Troast and Logan Wing. “Maranacook was just bigger than us, and reminded me of old school soccer.
“We weren’t the most talented team and were young, but as the season went on we became more focused. I am proud of this team in the way they pulled together.”
Freeport netminder Brendan Qualls turned away six shots, while Black Bears keeper A.J. Freeman had two stops.
