RICHMOND — Having lost five games due to using an ineligible player earlier this season, the Greenville High School boys slipped down to the No. 4 seed for the Western Maine Class D postseason.

Instead of a possible Western D championship showdown, the Lakers and topseeded Richmond Bobcats met in the semifinals on Friday, with Greenville coming away with a back-and-forth 3- 2 victory.

The win sends the 9-7 Lakers up against No. 2 Pine Tree Academy on Wednesday in the Western D final, while Richmond sees its season come to an end at 14-1.

“Losing for this team was a tough pill to swallow,” said Richmond coach Joe Scribellito. “We had good pressure throughout the game and I liked what was happening out there.”

Richards finished off a Hersey pass to give the Lakers a 1-0 halftime lead.

Richmond battled back, tying the game when Randy Moody headed a pass from Nate Tribbet past Greenville keeper Corey Henderson (eight saves) 4:33 into the second half.

Hersey, from Richards, gave Greenville a one-goal lead again, but Moody converted a pass from Tribbet to tie the game midway through the frame.

However, Richards launched a direct kick from 25-yards out past the dive of Richmond goaltender Dustin Sullivan (seven saves) to put Greenville ahead to stay.

“This team exceeded by expectations, considering how tough our schedule was, with Waynflete, Sacopee Valley and Greenville twice,” said Scribellito, who loses seniors Eddie Stewart, Moody, Xavier Trask and Brett Stillwell. “To win the conference was big for the kids. It was a great season.”
