YARMOUTH — John “Jack” Loren Hodgman Jr., 73, of Yarmouth died unexpectedly Oct. 25. He was born on June 26, 1939 in Brewer, the younger of two sons of John and O. Frances (Reed) Hodgman.

He grew up in South Portland and graduated from South Portland High School, class of 1958. There he was a member of the Maine state championship basketball team. Following the championship, he had the pleasure of playing in Boston Garden against other New England state championship teams.

Hodgman attended SMVTI where he studied drafting. Later, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served four years as a medic. After his discharge he returned to Maine and began a career in manufacturing with various companies.

He married his wife, Ann, on Aug. 17, 1968.

He enjoyed watching just about any sporting event in person or on television. The last night of his life was spent watching his son-in-law’s Fryeburg Academy soccer team playing Yarmouth in the quarterfinal tournament game.

Hodgman is survived by his wife of 44 years, Ann Hodgman, of Yarmouth; his daughter, Kelley Hodgman-Burns and her husband, Robert, and their daughters  Isabel, Anna Kathryn and Lucy Margaret, all of Fryeburg; his son, Michael Hodgman and his wife, Tammy, and their daughters Abigayle and Emma Grace, all of Windham; his brother, Wayne Hodgman and his wife, Becky, of Florida.

A celebration of Hodgman’s life will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Nov. 2, at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth with a reception immediately following at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at a later date.
