Falmouth High School National Merit Scholarship semifinalists announced

Seven Falmouth High School seniors have been named semifinalists in the 58th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Alexander Han, Azad Jalali, Jackson Pike, Seamus Powers, Emma Sapat, Thomas Wilberg and Zachary Winkeler will continue in the competition for 8,300 Merit scholarships with more than $32 million. The scholarships will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to become finalists. About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected become finalists, and approximately half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

Young students exceed bottle drive goal

Pre-k and kindergarten students at Winfield Children’s House recently met the Q97.9’s Cans for a Cure truck in the school parking lot to donate 2,565 bottles and cans to help fund cancer research.

The bottle drive was organized in late September when teachers Maureen Fasulo and Nicole Mundy heard about the fundraiser and  brought the idea up with the children. The class was immediately inspired to help children with cancer and their families.

The class wrote an email to Q97.9 morning radio hosts Meredith Manning and Lori Voornas. The told the hosts about the signs they made to post around the school and their goal to collect 500 bottles. The hosts arranged to visit the classroom and pick up their donation in person.

Each morning, families brought in big bags of returnables and the children practiced counting by totaling their collections.

Winfield Children’s House is a Montessori school in Falmouth that enrolls more than 80 children in toddler through pre-k and kindergarten classrooms. The school is accredited by the Montessori School Accreditation Council an affiliate of the American Montessori Society, and is the only school in southern Maine with this designation.

Freeport Middle School seventh graders recently visited the Schoodic Education Adventure Program at Acadia National Park. With access to forest, wetland and shoreline ecosystems, students engaged in hands-on natural and cultural study at New England’s only national park. The three-day, two-night program included ranger-led programs in geology, tidepooling, soil science and mapping. 

Students at Winfield House in Falmouth set out to collect 500 bottles and cans to raise money for cancer research. When the drive was completed, more than 2,500 returnables were presented to Q97.9 radio hosts Meredith Manning and Lori Voornas.
