TENNIS

Washington State is 2-6 this season.

FUNDRAISING: Famed Texas football coach Darrell Royal is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, and his wife, Edith, is selling some of his personal memorabilia to raise money to fight the disease. Notable items for the Nov. 11 auction include a diamond pendant commemorating the 1963 national championship, and a diamond ring from the Longhorns’ 2006 BCS title win over Southern California.

Royal won 11 Southwest Conference titles and introduced the wishbone offense in 1968.

PREP SCHOOLS

GIRLS’ SOCCER: Anna Wright scored for Berwick Academy in an 8-1 loss to Southfield School at Brookline, Mass.

Izzy Eldridge assisted on Wright’s goal.

BOYS’ SOCCER: Dexter Doucette had two goals and two assists and Coach Patrick Connolly earned his 200th victory as Berwick Academy (9-5-2, 7-2-2 EIL) took an 8-1 decision over Lexington Christian Academy (9-5-2, 6-5-2) at South Berwick.

SAILING

REPORT: An inadequate lookout probably played a key role in causing a yacht to crash into an island during a California-to-Mexico yacht race in April that killed all four people aboard, a report concluded.

The Aegean likely was on autopilot when it sailed past a GPS waypoint and smashed into North Coronado Island off the Mexican coast, said a report by US Sailing, yacht racing’s national governing organization.

They were the first deaths in the Newport-to-Ensenada race’s 65-year history.
