The Portland-area arts organization Painting for a Purpose holds its annual fundraiser from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Grace Restaurant, 15 Chestnut St., Portland. This year, the group paired local artists with students to create colorful, whimsical wooden lobster boats and dories.

Proceeds from the auction will be used to fund service learning grants in Portland schools. Past grants have been used by the gardening club at Lyseth School to grow lettuce for school lunches, to refurbish the flagpole at Lyman Moore Middle School and to help Portland Arts and Technology High School students to help out with a Habitat for Humanity Project.

In addition to the boats and dories, also available on Thursday will be assorted painted items, including furniture, candlesticks, picture frames and baskets. Auction tickets cost $10; call 934-3616 or visit for information.
