It came and went in a flash, but the fall sports season, circa 2012, was once again a great one in the Mid-Coast.

Brunswick’s football team enjoyed a terrific year, winning seven games, largely on the back of senior bruiser Jared Jensen, who rushed for over 2,000 yards. The Dragons reached the Eastern A semifinals, where they suffered a painful 21-20 loss to Cony, to finish the year 7-3. Morse (2-6) and Mt. Ararat (0-9) failed to qualify for the postseason.

The lone regional champion this fall was the Mt. Ararat boys’ soccer team, which earned the top seed in Eastern A with a 12-1-1 mark, then defeated eighth-ranked Waterville (2-0), No. 4 Brunswick (4-1) and second-ranked Lewiston (2-1, in double overtime) to reach the state final. There, the Eagles had no answers for Scarborough and its senior Dan Ornstein, who had a hat trick in the first half, in a 4-0 loss, which ended their season at 15-2-1. Brunswick ended up 9-5-2. Morse missed the playoffs with a 4-10 mark.

On the girls’ side, Morse was very strong, once again. The Shipbuilders went 12-1-1 and earned the top seed in the region. Twice, Morse was able to rally for playoff wins, 4-2 over Freeport in the quarterfinals and 4-1 over Poland in the semis, but for the second straight fall, the Shipbuilders were eliminated by eventual champion Falmouth in the regional final, 2-0, ending their season at 14-2-1. Brunswick was unstoppable in the regular season, winning all 14 games by a composite 62-10 margin, but the Dragons were stunned by Erskine on penalty kicks in the quarterfinals, 3-2, to end up 14-1. Mt. Ararat also qualified for the postseason, but was ousted by eventual regional champion Bangor in the quarterfinals, 4-2, to end up 10-6.

Mt. Ararat’s field hockey team was the lone squad from the area to make the playoffs. After a solid 10-4 regular season, the fourth-ranked Eagles, blanked No. 5 Lewiston, 4-0, in the quarterfinals. They were no match for perennial powerhouse Skowhegan in the semifinals, however. Skowhegan, which went on to win yet another state title. ended Mt. Ararat’s year at 11-5 with an 11-0 decision. Brunswick went 2-9-3 this fall. Morse ended up 1-13.

The Brunswick girls came in fourth at the Class A cross country state meet. Mt. Ararat placed seventh. On the boys’ side, the Dragons were ninth and the Eagles 13th. Morse did not qualify.
