BRUNSWICK — Mary Scanlon, 90, died Nov. 9. The oldest of eight children of Irish immigrants, she was born in Manhattan and raised in the Bronx. She attended St. Benedict’s Elementary School and Hunter College High School.

She then attended business school and started a career as a typist. Marie, as she was always known, was also a professional runway model and an avid dancer at New York City’s dance halls in the 1940s. A devout Catholic, she was involved with Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

In 1949, she married William “Billy” Scanlon, a career officer with the U.S. Navy who grew up around the corner from her in the Country Club section of the Bronx. They were married 58 years.

Scanlon lived the life of a Navy wife until her husband retired. They had six children, and when the youngest reached elementary school, she resumed her career. She held a variety of jobs, the last as a medical transcriptionist at New York Hospital. After retirement, the couple moved to Cape Cod, where they lived until moving to Brunswick in 2004. They spent many winters in Florida, both in Venice and Palm Harbor.

Scanlon is survived by two sons, Larry Scanlon, of New York City, and Stephen Scanlon, of Cleveland; three daughters, Laura Cavicchi, of Braintree, Mass., Jennifer Scanlon, of Brunswick, and Sharon Mertzlufft, of Tampa; a sister, Madeline Walsh, of Pennsylvania; a brother, Thomas Barry, of Texas; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and dozens of nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son, James Scanlon.  

A private service was held by the family. Arrangements are in care of the Brackett Funeral Home, Brunswick.
