Cheverus students shared abundance through annual turkey drive

PORTLAND — Displaying a tireless work ethic in the face of many in need, students, staff and the community came together during the Cheverus High School Turkey Drive.

The annual event, one of the largest and longest running turkey drives in New England, culminated with the delivery of Thanksgiving baskets to more than 700 local families and individuals on Tuesday, Nov. 20.

The Thanksgiving baskets contained all of the fixings for a complete holiday meal, including turkey, stuffing, bread, milk, potatoes, vegetables and more.

For more than 40 years, Cheverus students have collected donations from school families, the community and local businesses.

Months before the day of delivery, the Cheverus Key Club worked with more than 20 community-based agencies and organizations to secure the donations and transport them to the school. In recent days, the students sorted the donations, packed the baskets and prepped them for delivery. Students mapped out the delivery plan, loaded the trucks and vans and made the deliveries to thankful people all over the area.

The Cheverus High School Key Club is one of the longest running high school community service programs in the country. The club is dedicated to providing service to the community and its motto is “Caring, Our Way of Life.”

Key Club members are required to complete a minimum of 10 hours of service for each quarter of the academic year.
