A family is taking temporary shelter while their 50 Central St. apartment, gutted by fire Friday, is being repaired.
The Quintano family, including children, were away from their Atlantic Townhouse Apartments residence when the fire struck at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Fire Chief Steve Hinds said today. The family spent the night at a Salvation Army shelter, and the Red Cross is tending to their shelter and clothing needs, Hinds said.
Meanwhile, the chief said, the repair work was under way as of this morning.
Hinds said that the fire emanated from an electrical outlet in the kitchen area.
“The first floor was what we’d call gutted,” he said. “There was smoke damage to the upstairs and to adjoining apartments at 62 and 58 Central St.
Hinds said that firefighters arrived to heavy smoke and fire in the kitchen area of the apartment. Crews from Brunswick, Phippsburg and West Bath assisted at the scene.
