Cape Elizabeth High to host TED event for students

CAPE ELIZABETH — Cape Elizabeth High School will host a TEDxYouth event Friday, becoming the first public high school in Maine to stage one of the popular youth conferences.

TEDxYouth conferences are fashioned after the internationally known TED conferences and licensed by TED, a nonprofit group devoted to “ideas worth spreading.” The Cape event, [email protected], is scheduled to be an all-day discussion featuring diverse, 10-12 minute talks designed to inspire young people in Maine.

The event is scheduled from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Students will be on a special schedule for the day, with the majority of the talks attended by juniors and seniors. An encore presentation will follow the regular event to introduce the underclasses to the series.

[email protected] will focus on the school district’s newly-approved mission, vision and values statement, “Open Minds and Open Doors,” with speakers focusing on the guiding values of community, academics, passion and ethics.

Featured speakers include: Libby Hoffman, founder of Catalyst for Peace; Alan Lishness, chief innovation officer for the Gulf of Maine Research Institute; Emilia Dahlin, singer, songwriter and artist; Fritz Grobe, circus performer and YouTube video creator; and Zoe Weil, co-founder and president of the Institute for Humane Education.

Senior class president Chelsey Whynot, who has attended two TEDx conferences and helped organized the Cape event, said that previous conference speakers “opened my mind to the possibilities of what can happen when a person pursues a passion with hard work and dedication.”
