BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College indoor track and field teams both took resounding wins in their first home meet of the season on Saturday at Farley Field House.

 
 
Erin Silva established a school record for the pole vault as the women’s team accumulated 185 points to defeat Southern Maine (126), Colby (19), St. Joseph’s (16) and Maine-Farmington (4).

Coby Horowitz and Chris Genco both won a pair of events for the men’s team as the Polar Bears scored 181 points to easily surpass Southern Maine (87), Bates (63), St. Joseph’s (32) and Maine-Farmington (6).

Silva broke her own school mark with a height of 12-02 to claim first place. Winners on the women’s side for Bowdoin included Camille Wasinger by a whisker in the 600-meter run (1:46.74), Samantha Copland in the 60 dash (8.18), Gina Stalica in the 1,000 (3:13.38) and Brenna Fischer in the 3,000 (11:10.06).

 
 
In the field events, Bowdoin got wins from Silva in the pole vault, Hayleigh Kein in the high jump (4-11.75), Michele Kaufman in the long jump (16-10.75), and Katharine Krupp in the triple jump (35-04.50).

Bowdoin also won the women’s4x400meterrelay (4:16.86)and4x800meter relay (10:21.37).

Horowitz won the one-mile run (4:16.87) and the 1,000 (2:41.24) to collect two firstplace finishes. Genco matched him with wins in the high jump (6-02.75) and long jump (21-02.75).

Other winners on the men’s side for Bowdoin included Nicholas Magalhaes in the 60 hurdles (8.97), Isaac May in the 600 (1:26.67), Kyle LeBlanc in the 60 dash (7.27), Eddy Page in the pole vault (13-01), and Anthony Bellavia in the triple jump (41-00.25).

The Polar Bear track teams will return to action on Jan. 12 with another home meet scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Farley Field House.

Men’s basketball

Keegan Pieri scored 22 points to lead Bowdoin to a 64-58 win over Colby on Friday evening at Morrell Gymnasium.

The Polar Bears posted their fourth consecutive win, and their second in as many nights, to improve to 5-2. The Mules dropped their third straight and dipped to 2-5.

Pieri led all players with 22 points to go with six rebounds and three blocks in the win. Bryan Hurley pitched in 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists for Bowdoin, which also had Andrew Madlinger (10 points) and Maximilian Staiger (10) in double-digits.

Colby was led by 17 points off the bench from Sam Willson.

Both teams struggled from the field in the opening half, but heated up towards the end of the frame. Colby’s Danny Chase nailed a 3-pointer to give Colby a brief lead late before Pieri knocked down a trifecta to beat the halftime buzzer, sending the teams into the locker room tied 22- 22.

After the squads exchanged the lead several times to open the second half, Colby opened up a three-point lead with 13 minutes remaining. The Mules used a 9-3 surge, keyed by six points from Willson, to open up a 47-38 lead with 9:10 to go.

Bowdoin quickly replied with a 9-2 run, drawing within two points, 49-47, on a pair of Staiger free throws with 7:21 remaining.

The Colby lead bounced between two and six points for the next three minutes before a pair of Madlinger free throws drew the game even at 54-54 with 4:22 on the clock. Willson nailed a baseline jumper to put the Mules back up, 56-54, but Madlinger splashed a 3-pointer on the next possession and Bowdoin cashed in on a foul away from the play to take a 58-56 edge with 3:50 left.

Bowdoin held a 42-37 edge on the glass as both teams struggled from the field. Colby hit on 33.3-percent of its shots compared to 38.2-percent for Bowdoin.

Bowdoin is off until after the New Year and will return to the court on Jan. 2 at Plymouth State.

Men’s hockey

John McGinnis scored a pair of goals to lead Bowdointo a 7-1 triumph over Connecticut College in its fall semester finale on Saturday afternoon.

The eighth-ranked Polar Bear men’s ice hockey team (9-0-1) is unbeaten after 10 games for the first time since 2001-02 and enter winter break without a loss for the first time since 2006-07. Bowdoin is one of four remaining unbeaten teams in Division III along with Adrian, Norwich and Hobart. The Camels fell to 2-5-1.

McGinnis scored twice to lead the visitors. Harry Matheson, Danny Palumbo and Colin Downey all contributed with a goal and an assist for the winning side. Kyle Lockwood and Tim McGarry recorded two assists each. Sophomore netminder Max Fenkell collected 13 of his 27 saves in the middle period to earn the victory in goal.

Freshman Tim DiPretoro scored his second goal of the season for Connecticut College in the second period. Mike Petchonka had 24 saves in two periods of action for the hosts. Tom Conlin made 11 stops in the third for the Camels.

Bowdoin held a 42-28 edge in shots. The visitors were 2- for-6 on their power play and held the Camels scoreless in five power-play attempts.

Bowdoin will return to action on Jan. 4 at Amherst College.

On Friday at Malden, Mass., Bowdoin scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second period and remained unbeaten with a 5-3 victory at Tufts in a NESCAC game played at Valley Forum II.

Senior Daniel Weiniger scored a goal and an assist for Bowdoin to reach the 100 career point milestone (48 goals, 52 assists). He is the 34th player in school history to reach the plateau and the sixth since 2000.

Tufts, led by sophomore defenseman Blake Edwards’ game-high three points with a goal and two assists, fell to 3- 4-1 and 1-3-1 with their third straight loss.

McGarry, McGinnis, Ollie Koo and Robert Toczylowksi scored for the Bears.

Steve Messina made 24 saves to improve to 6-0 in the Bowdoin net. McGinnis finished with a goal and an assist, while Ryan Collier and Rubinoff both posted two assists for the visitors.

Women’s hockey

Behind outstanding goaltending, Bowdoin and Norwich skated to a 1-1 tie at Watson Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The third-ranked Cadets move to 6-1-3 overall, while the Polar Bears stand at 4-1-1. The game was the final fall semester game for both squads.

Both teams traded good chances in a scoreless opening period. Bowdoin’s Stephanie Ludy had a pair of nice chances just moments apart midway through the frame, with her first chance in front slipping wide of the goal and her second hitting the pipe.

Norwich answered with a couple of quality chances, as Bowdoin’s Kayla Lessard stopped a breakaway chance by Norwich’s Renee Lortie and then flashed an excellent glove save on a wrist shot from Tyne Gove later in the stanza to keep the game scoreless after 20 minutes.

Bowdoin got on the board first in a penalty-filled second period, converting on a 5-on-3 power play as Ludy redirected a Rachel Kennedy shot on the back post at 14:24.

Norwich had a pair of great chances to tie the game before the end of the second, but Lessard swept aside a shot from Jillayne DeBus and Gove hit the pipe with just seconds left in the frame as Bowdoin carried a one-goal edge into the second intermission.

Both teams squandered power play chances early in the third period as the teams both had solid goal-scoring opportunities. Lessard made two standout glove saves off the stick of DeBus with under six minutes to play before Kelly Fish answered with a sparkling stop for Norwich on a Kayle Holtz shot with 4:15 left.

After pressuring the net for a long stretch late in the period, the Cadets finally drew even with under two minutes to play. Vanessa Champagne took the initial shot from the left slot that Lessard stopped. The puck bounced loose to the right of the net where Tori Charron flipped it topshelf over a sprawling Lessard to even the score with 1:46 remaining in regulation.

Bowdoin had the better chances to win in overtime, with a trio of great opportunities with under a minute to play. Holtz was stopped pointblank by Fisk with 33 seconds left and both Ariana Bourque and Kennedy had in-close chances in the closing moments that the Norwich netminder stopped to preserve the tie.

Lessard made 36 saves in goal for Bowdoin while Fisk stopped 28 for Norwich. Bowdoin went 1-of-8 on the power play while Norwich failed to score on six power play opportunities.

Bowdoin will return to action with two games in the midwest later this month. The Polar Bears will play at St. Norbert in Wisconsin on Dec. 29 before playing at Concordia in Minnesota on Dec. 31.

OnFriday, four different players scored as Bowdoin defeated visiting Holy Cross 4-1 at Watson Arena.

Madeline Lane, Stephanie Ludy, Kennedy and Kim Tess- Wanat scored a goal each in the win.

Alexandra Stevenson made 24 saves for the Crusaders before being relieved by Krista Manzanares, who turned away eight shots.

Lessard played a strong game in net for the Polar Bears, making 12 saves.
