BRUNSWICK — The Brunswick High School girls ice hockey team shook off a flat opening period, as well as an early-season scoring slump for a 6-4 victory over St. Dom’s at Sidney J. Watson Arena on Monday.

The win is the second straight for the Dragons, who improved to 2-3 and visit undefeated Edward Little/Leavitt on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

After falling behind 1-0 through a period, Brunswick rattled off four second-period goals to claim a 4-3 advantage.

“We were flat in the first period, but the second we got the wheels back under us,” said Brunswick coach Bill Bodwell.

Rachel Moroney scored two goals in the first five minutes of the second period. After Kelley McLellan’s second tied the game for St. Dom’s (1-3), Tess Cassidy picked up her first varsity goal for Brunswick, and Moroney broke a 3-3 deadlock with her third of four goals.

Cassidy had a big night, adding four assists to her totals, while linemate Eliza Brooks scored a goal just 19 seconds into the third period and added two assists. Maddie Wilkes also had two assists for the Dragons, with Grace Rabinowitz picking up a helper.

McLellan led the Saints with three goals, while Jessica Boulet picked up one. Tia Rotolico had four assists.

In goal, Brunswick netminder Erin Gay had 15 saves for the win, while Saints goaltender Taylor Fillebrown turned aside 26 shots.

At Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Julia Ginder had three goals to power the Capers (2-2- 1) to a victory over the winless Eagles (0-4).

Nellie Hetherington and Carly Raymond scored for Mt. Ararat, which visits Winslow on Wednesday.

Allison Mills, Emily Spidle and Kate Ewald also scored for Cape Elizabeth/Waynflete.

Basketball

WISCASSET — Hall-Dale pulled out the full-court press in the second half of Monday’s Mountain Valley Conference boys high school basketball game against Wiscasset.

The move worked, as the Bulldogs erased a 27-23 halftime deficit and pulled away for a 68-55 victory.

The loss drops the Wolverines to 1-1, with a visit to St. Dom’s slated for Thursday at 5:30 p.m., while Hall- Dale improved to 2-0.

“We didn’t handle the press very well,” said Wiscasset coach Dana Lawrence, whose team trailed 40-34 after three quarters.

Mike Woods paced Hall-Dale with 22 points, with Zach Plummer adding 13 and Bryson Camp 10.

For Wiscasset, John Rines had 15 points, while Dylan McMahon had a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Travis Padilla picked up 11 points, eight caroms and three assists, with three assists coming from Chandler Longfellow.

The Wolverines finished 16 of 20 from the foul line, with Hall-Dale going 12 of 19.

Before a fired-up home crowd in Bath, the Phoenix improved to 2-0 with a victory Kents Hill.

Down six in the first half, Hyde stormed back for a two-point lead at the half.

Kara Fischer led all scorers with 14 points to pace the Phoenix, who host Islesboro today at 5:30 p.m. Diamond Brown played tough on the boards and added nine points, while Chloe Blaylock had six points.

Playing well for Hyde were Jailene Martinez and Katie Comeaux.
