Markings Gallery on Front Street in Bath recently announced that Patty Olds has joined as a new partner, having worked in the arts for most of her adult life.

Schooled as an English major and trained as a sailmaker, she is careful about grammar and fearless with a sewing machine. She has been a commentator for public radio, a set and props designer for professional theater companies, and a mediator for the Maine Attorney General’s office.

Her business, Good Strong Stuff, prospered in Bath in the 1980s where she designed and constructed large street and storefront banners, custom canvas work for boat and home, and canvas tepees that were shipped throughout the United States and Canada.

She began making silk and cotton batik scrolls 15 years ago, and also pressed leaves and flowers for unique framed pictures three years ago. Her work has been featured in galleries and exhibitions nationally, in the Smith and Hawkins catalog, and last year at Portland Stage Company where she transformed actors into flowers for the holiday production of “The Snow Queen.”

Her scrolls can be found in galleries from Portland, Ore., to Bath.
