WISCASSET — The town’s RSU withdrawal committee, told earlier this week that a vote for withdrawal from Regional School Unit 12 probably couldn’t happen until next November, will meet at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 20 at the town office.
On Monday, RSU 12 attorney William Stockmeyer advised committee members that several issues remain to be negotiated, and that a Wiscasset withdrawal probably can’t take place by July 1. The state Department of Education is likely to agree to a November 2013 referendum vote for those reasons, Stockmeyer said.
According to the committee’s draft agreement, the town would assume ownership and control of all three of its schools.
Wiscasset High School is the only high school in the eight-town school unit.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
