GORHAM – Lee Vazquez made a shot at the buzzer from well beyond the 3-point line to lift Westfield State to an 80-79 win over the University of Southern Maine in a non-conference men’s basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium.

Westfield State (9-1) trailed 78-74 when Dan Johnson made a 3-pointer with five seconds left in regulation. The Huskies (6-3) then missed one of two fouls shots before the game-winner by Vazquez.

Alex Kee made four 3-pointers and finished with a career-high 29 points for the Huskies, who trailed by as many as 18 points in the first half before making it 41-38 at the half.

Conor Sullivan chipped in with 17 points and five rebounds for the Huskies, and Brandon Tomah added 16 points, five rebounds and four steals.

SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 75, UMAINE-MACHIAS 70: Mike Harmon made a pair of foul shots with 15 seconds left in regulation to extend the lead to five points as the Seawolves (13-3, 10-1) held on for a win over the Clippers (4-7, 2-4) in a Yankee Small College Conference game at Machias.

Emmanuel Donalson scored 20 points and Jon Amabile added 15 to lead the Seawolves.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UMAINE-MACHIAS 60, SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 47: Esther Palmieri finished with nine points, six rebounds and six steals to lead the Seawolves (9-4, 5-3) as they fell to the Clippers (7-3, 5-1) in a Yankee Small College Conference game at Machias.

FRAMINGHAM ST. 64, ST. JOSEPH’S 60: The Rams (6-3) closed with a 9-2 run to edge the Monks (5-3) at Framingham, Mass.

Lindsay Moore scored 17 points for St. Joseph’s, Danyelle Shufelt added 15, and Morgan Cahill had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

UNION 3, MAINE 2: The Black Bears fell to the Union College Dutchwomen at Alfond Arena. With the loss, Maine drops to 2-14-1 on the season while Union improves to 5-9-3.

Brittany Dougherty had two goals for Maine.
