HARPSWELL — Kenneth Roy “K.R.” or “Wuke-E” Toothaker, 77, lifelong resident of Harpswell died Wednesday, December 12, 2012 surrounded by his loving family at home. He was born April 9, 1935 in Harpswell, ME a son of Maurice and Marion (Morgan) Toothaker. He was educated in local schoolhouses.

K.R. worked for many years as a lobsterman. He was very well known in his community of Harpswell as well as the surrounding areas of Sebasco and Phippsburg. He had also run a small wholesale wharf but his true passion was to be on the water fishing. He enjoyed anything that had to do with the water, whether it be building docks and wharfs, building lobster traps or just spending time with his fellow fishermen, he was a true “Maine Fisherman.”

Wuke-e told it like it was. He was not afraid of offending someone with his opinion and would be the first one to let someone know if the dress they were wearing that day was not exactly “flattering.” K.R. was also a very sentimental man. He would always have a hard time getting through shows on the animal planet without shedding a tear or two for the animals depicted in the show. He held a very warm place in his heart for animals, especially his beloved dogs “Roscoe,” “Willie” and “Daisy.”

By far the most important thing to K.R. was his family. He truly loved to spend time with them and each held a special place in his heart.

K.R. was predeceased by his parents, a son Timothy Tom Toothaker, a granddaughter, Rebecca Kim Bisson, three sisters, Margaret Foster, Sylvia Brown and Madeline Harris (who raised him after the death of their mother when K.R. was just 3 years old). Madeline was always affectionately referred to as “Mama Maddie.”

Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, Jacqueline ( Byrne) Toothaker of Harpswell, a son Kenneth Toothaker, Jr. of Harpswell, five daughters, Kimberly Johnson of Harpswell, Cynthia Ann and her husband Jamey Glynn of Bowdoin, Georgia Lee Temple and her companion Garey Hartley of Bowdoin, Susan Jean Toothaker of Brunswick, Madeline Marie and her husband Tom Morrison of Brunswick, a brother George Toothaker of Gray, ME, a sister Barbara Holbrook of New York, grandchildren: Kasey, Cheyanne, Makenzie, Crystal, Rachel, Jamey Jr., Melinda, Teddy, Christopher and Phillip as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also survived by a special fisherman friend, whom K.R. often thought of as a son, Jeffrey Temple of Harpswell.

Visiting hours were held from 2-4 and 6-8 PM on Sunday, December 16, 2012 at Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal Street, Brunswick. A funeral service was planned at 10 AM today, Monday, December 17, 2012 at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Cranberry Horn Cemetery, Cundy’s Harbor Road in Harpswell.
