After several weeks on the lam, Augusta police arrested Steven Shaw, the man wanted by Windham police for impersonating an undercover sheriff’s detective last month.
Shaw was arrested in an attic of an apartment building on Sarah’s Street in Augusta at about 3 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22, Augusta Police Chief Robert Gregoire said Wednesday.
An anonymous call to authorities alerted police of his presence. Gregoire said Shaw was on the street in front of the home when police arrived. When police called to the man, Shaw retreated into the building. The owner of the building was locked outside and cooperated with police by giving them a key, Gregoire said. Police methodically searched the building and eventually found Shaw hiding under insulation in the attic. He was cooperative once found, Gregoire said.
Shaw is being held at Kennebec County Jail on a combination of $25,000 cash bail from Cumberland County and $2,000 from Somerset County. He faces charges following investigations by the Windham and Waterville police departments as well as Somerset County Sheriff’s Office. Charges include theft by unauthorized use of property, two counts of burglary, two counts of theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, violating conditions of release, theft by extortion and impersonating a public servant.
According to Lt. Carl Gottardi of Somerset County, the thefts and burglary charges stem from break-ins at a town office and a private residence in St. Albans as well as store burglaries in the Palmyra/Hartland area. Those incidents took place on the same night in early November, Gottardi said.
Windham had issued a warrant for Shaw’s arrest in connection with the Nov. 21 incident where Shaw is accused of impersonating an undercover Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office detective at a Windham man’s home. Shaw is said to have extorted money from the man threatening him with arrest if he didn’t pay him money. The Windham man drove Shaw to TD Bank in North Windham, where an ATM camera captured images of Shaw waiting until the man withdrew money. The man then dropped off Shaw near Lampron’s Lil Mart on Route 115.
