OLD ORCHARD BEACH — There’s one Seagull that stands out in Old Orchard Beach, and his name is Quincy Grace. The 6 foot, 4 inch senior center for the Old Orchard Beach boys basketball team has been the center of attention for a Seagull team hoping to have a special season.
Grace broke onto the scene for Old Orchard Beach last season, but has taken his game to another level so far this year.
“He had a good season last year. And I think coming into this year, he’s worked on his game. He’s become a very good inside player for us,” said Old Orchard Beach head coach John Regan. “Quincy has been great. He’s had a very good first six games for us.”
Through six games, Grace is averaging 15.5 points per game, and 11.1 rebounds per game. He’s scored at least 13 points in every game, and has been the Seagulls leading scorer in four of the six games.
Twice Grace has almost matched the total output of the Seagulls’ opponent. He scored 17 points in a 51-23 win over NYA, and a season-high 18 in a 74-23 rout of Sacopee Valley.
“Quincy hasn’t really had an off, off game,” said Regan. “93 points in six games is pretty good.”
Grace has been the focal point of the Seagull offense, and has handled that burden well, said Regan.
“He’s the guy who our offense kind of goes through. It’s important for us to get the ball to him in positions where he can score. And he’s been able to do that so far,” said Regan.
Grace has been tough to stop because he has worked on his low-post game, as well as being able to hit mid-range shots when the defense plays off of him. It’s a skill set that is hard to stop in the Class C Western Maine Conference.
“When he plays down low, he can play with his back to the basket. He can also step out. I think he’s a little more efficient in terms of hitting that 12 or 15 foot shot,” said Regan.
While the Seagulls sit at just 3-3 six games into the season, they have played competitive in all six games. Their losses are by a combined seven points.
Grace has been a big reason why the Seagulls have proven a tough team to beat in the early going. And he will continue to be called upon as they try to keep their season going deep into February.
“We’ve been in every game, and Quincy has certainly been a factor in every one of those,” said Regan.
