Topsham police charged a man with cruelty to animals after he allegedly threw a dog across a room the day after Christmas.
Topsham police Lt. Fred Dunn said the incident, reported Dec. 26 at 7:25 p.m., prompted police to issue a summons for cruelty to animals and possession of drug paraphernalia to Johnathan Aday, 28, who was staying with an ex-girlfriend at 20 Harmony Hill.
Aday allegedly came home to the residence, had been drinking and found the dog had got out of its kennel and chewed some pictures in the trailer, police said. Aday became upset and picked up the dog and threw it, in front of two children, Dunn said. The dog hit the metal crate and bent it. Aday then allegedly hit the dog in the head and threw the dog against the wall and kicked the dog’s head and body. Dunn estimated the dog weighed around 50 pounds.
The dog did not appear injured, according to the responding officer.
