‘Snowy Day’ for Pleasant Hill

Students from Pleasant Hill Primary School recently participated in an Annual Winter Wonderland event, celebrating community service and some family fun.

This year’s event, themed, “It’s a Snowy Day,” featured a number of correlating projects in classes, including painting, sculpture and music.

Music also was provided by music teacher Andy Robbins and his jazz trio.

Parent volunteers and staff assisted in planning, setup, snack serving and cleanup.

Piper Shores donates to barn

Piper Shores nonprofit lifecare retirement community has donated $2,000 to the Scarborough Land Trust to assist in the re-siding of the east wall of the Long Barn at Broadturn Farm in Scarborough.

The 434-acre farm property is owned by the Scarborough Land Trust and leased to local farmers who use part of the property for agricultural and educational purposes, as well as for a flower and wedding business.

The donation from Piper Shores will be used to aid in the re-siding of the Long Barn at Broadturn Farm.

Built in the 1890s, it is the largest and oldest of three barns on the property.

The project is part of a plan for needed renovations to the Long Barn, which is expected to include a new roof and additional siding as funds become available.

Clubhouses get new shoes

Last week, Boys & Girls Club members at the Riverton Park and Sagamore Village Clubhouses received new shoes from the Payless Gives Shoes 4 Kids 2012 merchandise distribution.

Through this grant program, the clubs received coupons for 200 kids and teenagers to go shopping for new shoes and winter gear.

The Payless ShoeSource shopping event was held just after the recent reopening of Boys & Girls Clubs’ expanded and renovated Riverton Park Clubhouse.

Both clubhouses are open to members, ages 5-13, who live in each of the public housing communities in their areas.

The mission of Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine is to inspire and enable all young people, particularly those who need help the most, to realize their full potential as responsible, productive and caring citizens.

The clubs have five locations in Portland, South Portland and Auburn.

They serve more than 2,700 kids and teenagers a year.

Their mission is to help youths succeed in the areas of academics, health, citizenship and character.
