In much of the world, it would be fantasy to think Christians, Buddhists, Muslims, Jews and Hindus could serve the public together in peace.

Yet the incoming Congress will be the most religiously diverse in U.S. history. The House will welcome its first Hindu, Hawaii Democrat Tulsi Gabbard, who takes the seat of Mazie K. Hirono, who will become the first Buddhist U.S. senator. Two other Buddhists are returning. So are two Muslims.

Members of Congress will find many reasons to quarrel. That religious doctrine won’t be one of them is a remarkable achievement worth celebrating.
