CUMBERLAND — A recent wind storm was powerful enough to break windows and tear off part of a roof at the Cumberland Fairgrounds.

A passerby who saw the damage to the grandstand building called the incident in late in the afternoon of Dec. 21, according to Cumberland Fair President Mike Timmons.

“The wind was blowing very bad at that time for about 45 minutes,” he said last week.

A 12-foot by 12-foot plate glass window on the front of the building was blown out by a wind gust. Five sections of the roof over the clubhouse were also torn off, Timmons said.

The amount of damage was still being determined as of late last week, but Timmons said it could end up costing more than $50,000.

“We have adequate (insurance) coverage to take care of the issue,” he said.

With the roof still open, snow has been cleared out of the building as soon as it has fallen.

“We want to be able to – if we can – repair it,” Timmons said. “With the weather the way it’s been, and the temperature the way it is, that’s not an easy task to accomplish. We might end up with something temporary, but something temporary has to be pretty permanent because of the wind, the way it blows around here.”
