Programs will be offered throughout the winter vacation week, Feb. 18 to 22, on Chewonki’s 400-acre campus and inside its Center for Environmental Education.
Events and activities are designed to be fun and educational and are geared for children in grades 1 through 8. Activities will include a family fun day, outdoor cooking and farm visit, building and creating with natural materials, winter arts and crafts, and an all new togoggan building workshop.
Following are options for the week:
— Winter Family Day: Monday, Feb. 18, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Snowshoeing, animal tracking, pizza making, and “Animal Adaptations” presentation. Learn about animals and winter adaptations while snowshoeing on Chewonki Neck. Bake a pizza lunch over a campfire. Spend the morning outdoors and the afternoon indoors. Open to all ages at parent discretion. Snowshoes are available in limited sizes.
This program is also open to any first- through eighth-grade day camper without an adult attending. Please call for details. Cost is $35 adult with one child, and $10 per additional child with a maximum of four children per adult; or $37 for children attending without an adult.
— Winter Vacation Camp for grades 1 to 5: Feb. 19 to 22, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Activities vary by day. The schedule includes: Tuesday — outdoor cooking and farm visit; Wednesday — building and creating with natural materials; Thursday — winter arts and crafts; and Friday — animal tracking.
Cost is $37 per day or sign up for all four days and get a 10 percent discount. Participants may sign up for one or more days.
— Toboggan building workshop for grades 5 to 8: Feb. 19 to 22, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The toboggan building and sledding adventure also offers an option Thursday overnight stay in Chewonki’s wood-heated canvas wall tents.
Cost is $210 for week, which includes Thursday overnight.
All programs are instructed by Chewonki’s experienced naturalists and teachers. Enrollment is limited and will be available on a first-come, firstserved basis. Chewonki will offer similar programs during spring vacation week in April.
