SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Senior Logan Russell of Bath and junior Rick Chipman of Harpswell each had two pins to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies wrestling team to a rare doubleheader sweep of the Western New England University Golden Bears Saturday afternoon at the Alumni Healthful Living Center Field House in Springfield, Mass.
Southern Maine defeated WNEU 31-18 in the opening match and then barreled through for a 28-23 win in the second to improve its dual meet record to 7-2.
In the opening match, Russell’s pin over Nik Moreschi in the 157-pound bout kickstarted a pivotal five-bout win streak for the Huskies to earn the win. Prior to Russell’s win by fall in 1:57 and subsequent six points, the Huskies trailed the Golden Bears 12-6. Two matches later, Chipman matched Russell’s point total, pinning his opponent Zach Bantle at 174-pounds in 1:01.
In the second match, Russell and Chipman again accounted for 12 of the Huskies 28 points. Russell earned his team-leading eighth pin of the season, putting Moreschi to the mat in 3:24, while Chipman earned the quickest pin of the day and his second of the season in downing WNEU freshman Nick Millerto to the mat in just 39 seconds.
Southern Maine returns to action on Sunday (1 p.m.) at Norwich University for matches with Norwich, Johnson & Wales and Stevens Tech.
