FREEPORT — Coming into Tuesday’s Western Maine Conference contest with Lake Region, first-year Freeport coach Jim Seavey tried to get his team to believe.
After a 48-32 victory over previous Western Maine Class B top team Lake Region, Seavey feels his Falcons are on board with that belief.
“It finally makes them believe in themselves, and eliminates any doubt that they are capable of beating anyone,” said Seavey, who said this is the first time the Falcons have knocked off a No. 1 team.
Leading 23-21 at the half, Freeport (6-4) outscored Lake Region (9-2) 15-0 in the third quarter to pull away.
“We extended our pressure to full court, and they had a hard time getting their offense going,” said Seavey, whose squad visits Wells on Thursday.
Nina Davenport scored 23 points, pulled down eight rebounds and picked up seven steals for the Falcons, while Leigh Wyman had a solid allaround game with nine points, nine caroms, six assists and three steals. Vanessa Lee finished with six points and five boards.
Kayleigh LePage led the Lakers with nine points.
Freeport was eight of 12 at the foul line, while Lake Region finished six of 10.
