A recent $30,300 award from March of Dimes will allow increased scheduling opportunities and patient capacity at Mid Coast Hospital.

The hospital said in a news release that CenteringPregnancy — a group program that integrates basic prenatal health assessment and education with social support — will benefit from the grant.

The program, facilitated by a midwife and maternity nurses, allows women with similar “due months” to meet in a group setting and participate in their own care by weighing themselves, checking blood pressures and recording in their own charts.

Maternity director Eileen Delaney said studies indicate decreases in the number of cesarean sections and premature births after the program.

The grant will help purchase materials and equipment for group sessions, and fund training for staff and maternity nurses.
