Gun Control

On Thursday, Jan. 24, Bill Diamond will host “Speakout” on Windham’s local channel 7 at 7 p.m. The topic will be the gun control issue with special guests Rep. Tom Tyler and Sally Breen. Call in your questions during the live show at 892-0546 or come to the council chambers at town hall and be part of the audience.

Meat for Food Pantry

If anyone has extra deer, moose, beef or pork, the food pantry would love to share it with clients and they have the freezer space to store it. Just call Madeline at 892-1931.

100 Snowflakes

The Windham Public Library sent more than 100 handmade paper snowflakes to Sandy Hook youngsters. Thanks to all who helped.

Bean Supper

Cornerstone Assembly of God, Cottage Road, Windham will host a baked bean supper on Saturday, Jan. 19, from 5-6:30 p.m. Home baked beans, hot dogs, casseroles, salads, bread and rolls, and plenty of homemade desserts are on the menu. Adults $6, children 6-12, $3. and under age six, free.

History’s Mysteries

On Saturday, Jan. 19, Windham Historical Society will present a program called “History’s Mysteries,” at 9 a.m. at Windham Public Library on Windham Center Road. The public is invited and may bring some unique or even unidentified object that relates to Windham history to explain or get identified. The one-hour program will be followed by refreshments and a business meeting. There is no fee, but donations are always welcome.

Hymn Sing

On Sunday, Jan. 20 from 4:30-5:30 p.m., an old-fashioned hymn sing will be held at Raymond Village Community Church, Route 121 (Main Street) just north of Route 302 in Raymond Village. No service, no sermon, no collections – just singing for all ages, led by the church’s music director, Karen Strange. Call 655-7749 for more information.

Help for Veterans

On Wednesday, Jan. 23, Veterans Service Officer Phyllis D’Orsay is available at the Windham Veterans Center, as she is on the second and fourth Wednesdays every month, from 9 a.m. until noon. She assists veterans, widows of veterans and dependents with questions about benefits and other information. If you have questions of a military nature, stop in and get some answers. No appointment is needed.

Thrift Shop

The Thrift Shop at the North Windham Union Church is open from 1-3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday or 10 a.m. until noon Saturdays. The Thrift Shop is in the lower level of the church.

Grief Support Group Starts

A six-week Grief Support Group will start on Fridays from 1:30-3 p.m., Jan. 25 through March 1 at VNA Home Health Hospice, 50 Foden Road, South Portland. This will be a closed group with the same group of people meeting for the six sessions. Free Meal

On Saturday, Jan. 26, a free community meal will be served from 4:30-6 p.m. at Christ Chapel, 37 Northern Pines Road, Raymond. This is open to the surrounding communities and all ages are welcome. The meal includes baked stuffed shrimp, salads, casseroles and desserts. You can just show up!

Great Chili Challenge

The third annual Great Chili Challenge will be held on Saturday, Feb. 2, at the North Windham Union Church, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is the largest fundraiser for the Windham Community Garden so come out to support it. About 15 participants are making a variety of chili for folks to sample. Bring your family, friends and neighbors for a great time and really great food. The donation is $7 adults, $4 children. Desserts will also be available. Get some chili from your favorite vendor to take home for the Super Bowl, which is the next day!

Veteran services

On Wednesday, Feb. 6, combat veteran and Clinical Psychologist Dr. Clifford Trott from Portland Vets Center will offer mental health services to area veterans at Windham Veterans Center. These sessions are one-on-one and strictly confidential. Drop-ins are welcome but appointments are recommended. Call 780-3584. He is usually available on the first and third Wednesdays. To get to the Windham Veterans Center, enter Veterans Memorial Drive off Route 302 between Evergreen Credit Union and Friendly’s and follow to the end.

Father/Daughter Dance

The annual Father/Daughter Dance is Friday, Feb. 8, at the Windham Middle School from 7-8:30 p.m. Space is limited so purchase tickets sooner rather than later for this evening out with dad. Tickets are at the Windham Parks and Recreation Department. Dads, granddads, uncles, older brothers or special others, mark this date on your calendar. This event is for daughters in fifth grade or younger. Contact the Windham Parks and Recreation Department, 892-1905.

Eco-Excellence Awards

Local nominees for eco-Excellence Awards are being sought by ecomaine. There are 45 municipalities involved and awards are annually presented to individual, organizations and businesses in these towns/cities, to recognize “green” activities. Summerfest 2013
