Tri-Town Weekly reporter and editor Mike Higgins, who has been with the paper since its first issue in July 2012, will be leaving Current Publishing, the Tri-Town Weekly’s parent company, after close to nine years with the firm. His last day is Jan. 23.

Higgins will be replaced on the Freeport, Pownal and Durham beat by Matthew Stilphen.

Higgins, a Durham resident, is moving to Townsquare Media in Augusta, where he will become the digital managing editor for the company’s three radio stations. Higgins will be responsible for all of the local content on the websites for stations WMME-FM, WEBB-FM and WJZN-AM.

Higgins said he was proud at how the Tri-Town Weekly has been overwhelmingly accepted by readers in all three towns.

“It’s very gratifying to me to hear how much people like this paper,” he said. “Everybody here at Current Publishing, from the ad staff to our graphics department and the news staff, works very hard to put out the best possible paper each week, and to see how well people have responded to it has been great.”

A Maine native, Stilphen recently returned to the state after a two-year stint in Austin, Texas, where he was pursuing a career in the music industry. A journalism major in college, he is especially drawn to community reporting and its role in the lives of readers.

“I feel community newspapers are an essential and invaluable resource for an area,” Stilphen said. “For me personally, it’s a chance to chronicle and document a slice of Maine during a very interesting time in our state’s history.”

Stilphen has previously worked in Boston, Asheville, N.C., and in Bath for the Coastal Journal.

“I am confident that Matt is going to continue bringing Tri-Town Weekly readers the best in local news and features,” said Higgins. “I know I’ll be looking forward to getting it in my mailbox every Wednesday.”

Also joining the staff this week is Kayla Snow, a Pownal native and Freeport High School graduate. She is working with lead advertising representative Lynn Woolf in supporting local businesses.
