Bowdoinham’s new senior center will open Thursday, giving older residents in Bowdoinham a room of their own for learning, playing games and enjoying each other’s company.
The Bowdoinham Senior Center will open at 1:15 p.m. Thursday at the Second Baptist Church. The event is planned to coincide with the monthly Village Seniors’ luncheon served around noon at the church after an 11 a.m. social hour.
The Second Baptist Church, located at 1 Church St., just off Main Street, will be the site for the weekly senior center each Thursday. Residents are encouraged to come for lunch at Thursday’s event and then stay to enjoy card and board games and share ideas for making the senior center a valued community resource.
After the opening Thursday, the center will be open every Thursday in the basement of the church, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The concept for the Bowdoinham Senior Center came out of a study by the town’s Comprehensive Plan Committee, which sought ways the town could become a more aging-friendly community. The establishment of the senior center is the first project of the newly created Committee on Aging.
Theresa Turgeon, a member of the Board of Selectmen and the Committee on Aging, said those attending the senior center Thursday will be asked what services they would like the center to offer.
An aging needs assessment was completed this last July as part of the comprehensive plan work, Turgeon said. The assessment identified opening a town senior center as a “do-able” priority of the recommendations made, and the Committee on Aging is using the assessment report as a guide for identified future needs for the aging population.
Another service people have requested, for example, is some kind of activity calendar that encompasses all service in town already existing, Turgeon said. There are book clubs and a bridge club, and a van that every Monday takes folks to Topsham grocery shopping — all things many residents don’t know about, “so we want to try to identify and make available everything that’s going on,” Turgeon said.
