SCARBOROUGH — Jane N. Gillis, 78, of Scarborough, died peacefully Saturday at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.

Born Sept. 25, 1934, in Sydney, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of John and Geraldine Gillis.

Gillis earned her bachelor of science degree in home economics at St. Francis Xavier University in 1956. In the late 1970s, she relocated to Cincinnati to pursue a master’s degree in nutrition, and also earned a master’s degree in religion.

She worked in Cincinnati at Christ Hospital for amost two decades, before retiring to the East Coast in 1999 and settling in Maine.

She is survived by a sister, Sally, of Sydney, Nova Scotia; two brothers, Joseph, of Marlborough, Mass., and Ronald and his wife Della, of Antigonish, Nova Scotia; sisters-in-laws Bernadette and Joan, both of Antigonish, and Mina Gillis Chamberlain, of Quispamis, New Brunswick; a niece, Marie Gillis, of Antigonish; and many other nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved.

In addition to her parents, Jane was predeceased by six brothers, Lawrence, Gerald, John Hugh, Cyril, Chris and Bernie; three sisters, Mary, Aileen and Anne; and a sister-in-law, Veronica.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 12 p.m. at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, 150 Black Point Road, Scarborough. Interment will be at a later date in St. Ninian’s Cemetery, Antigonish.

Donations may be made in Gillis’ memory to the Good Shepherd Food Bank, where she loved to volunteer, at P.O. Box 1807, Auburn, ME 04211-1807.
