Democracy will be on full display at tonight’s Brunswick Town Council meeting.
The town has been heard in its attempts to enhance local representation on the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority Board of Trustees. They may offer names for that vital role at the meeting tonight.
Though the slot will not be filled until September, it’s a positive development in a halting relationship.
Later, citizens will present councilors with signatures from residents fed up with the corrupting influence of money in elections.
These residents want Brunswick to join two dozen other Maine municipalities with resolutions asking Congress to overturn the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United that allows unlimited, unregulated and unidentified money to steer elections. Councilors would do well to endorse this petition. The meeting is 7 p.m. at Brunswick Station.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
