FALMOUTH

Defending state champion Greely served up a whopping 60 shots on Brunswick High School en route to a 5-1 Eastern Maine semifinal girls ice hockey verdict Monday at the Family Ice Center.

Rachel Moroney scored the Dragons lone goal, a power-play tally in the third period as Brunswick’s season ended at 8- 12. Brunswick loses seniors Eliza Brooks, Moroney, Chanel Sturniolo, Gillian Ford and Erin Gay.

“Greely is such a great team,” said Brunswick coach Bill Bodwell. “They’re the best team I’ve seen in my five years of coaching. They are complete all through the lineup”

The teams had met twice during the regular season with the Rangers prevailing 6-0 and 7-3.

The Rangers, who hit the post twice in the opening frame, outshot Brunswick 18-2 in the first period, but led just 1-0 with 9:52 remaining on a goalmouth scramble tally by Maura Verrill. Assists went to Paige Tuller and Meg Finlay.

In the second period, Tulley and Finlay each lit the lamp for a 3-0 advantage.

With 31 seconds gone in the third period, Moroney put the Dragons on the board when she converted a Mary Sasso feed. “She carried the puck, made a play out of the corner and had a nice shot,” said Bodwell. “That was our only powerplay opportunity.”

Ford, Grace Rabinowitz and Brooks were game-long defensive standouts.

Sarah Kurland converted on a powerplay at 3:44 of the final period and Mary Morrison scored unassisted at 5:48 as the 16-2-1 Rangers completed a 60-7 shots differential.

Greely moves on to play Leavitt/Edward Little, a 3-2 double overtime victor over Lewiston, on Wednesday in the regional championship.
